Taking good-looking Screenshots

(return)

Graphical Screenshots

You can take graphical screenshots at any time. If you have trouble catching the moment when a dragon is breathing on you, go to options and increase the delay.

When you hit the print screen key, one of two things will happen. In the cross-platform SDL port, a picture of the screen is saved as a bitmap (.bmp) file in either the game directory or in your user directory, Sangband section. In the Windows port, a picture of the screen is saved to the Clipboard.

In either case, you should open up the file, or paste the image, into your preferred image-editing program. Save to a new file in either .gif or .png format - both work well, but different editors often do better with one than the other. Avoid using .jpg or .bmp: The first is grainy and washed out; the second is far too large.

Other useful tricks you can do with images are to crop them (greatly reduces file size), reduce colors to 256 (very helpful before saving to .gif), or even make a slideshow.

Upload the image to either your own webspace (many accounts include some) or to free image storage services like Photobucket and Imageshack.

Other kinds of Screenshots

There are alternate ways to take screenshots if you just want a quick example, are using a terminal-based port, or have trouble with editing or hosting pictures. When the game is showing the main view, type ')' to capture the screen. If posting on the Angband Forum, your best format option is "Forum"; this creates a file that can be posted directly.
